Just a list of facts:
- Sarkozy elected with 52,7% against Ségolène Royal with 47,3%
- 86% voters
- most right-wing members talking with satisfaction, calm, and a wish to unite the country around their new leader
- many left-wing members, socialists, mentioning that it’s a serious defeat and that the socialist party needs major reform; Dominique Strauss-Kahn (brilliant guy) urging for this renewal pointing towards social-democracy, Ségolène Royal says she’s going to continue her fight, towards this same goal (I believe), most of the socialist members clearly expressing that they’ll monitor very closely the actions and general currents of the new majority; all calling for a mobilisation regarding the parliament elections to come (june 16th), which will decide which majority at the parliament & senate Sarkozy will be ruling with
- riots in many french towns last night, many people (especially youngsters) very unhappy and worried at this new possible totalitarian-like regime to come; street riot scenes reminding me of Pinochet’s Chile back in the 70’s & 80’s
- on the right side, supporters so happy with this ‘much awaited change’
- all in all, this whole campaign and its result show a huge effervescence all around the country, something similar to 1981, when Mitterrand came in power; thing is, this time it’s on the other side of the political scope.
Personally, I am just going to watch what’s going to happen over the coming months and years and get involved if and when needed.
