Cost of food on the rise

20 08 2007

I read this morning in the paper that the global price of food is on the rise, and that there are two main causes for this: the first being that Asia (and mainly China) is consuming more and more basic products like milk or bread, and the second being the after effects of climate change. This summer for instance, many crops in the UK are lost because of the floods. And we’re talking about basic needs here. So I think governments, the EU council, should take steps and pour in funds so that the price of basic needs stays low. The money is there. We pay enough taxes for it to be. We need more regulations. We need to think coherently and in unity. Because things aren’t going to get better. Climate change is going to affect us so much more in the coming years; hurricane Dean is only the first of a list to take place this year. We need to prepare ourselves and adapt.
